Three American Dreams from New Orleans

Now that I am finally settled, or mostly, in New York production is being ramped up. I will be posting more and more short clips from the people we talked to along our journey in June and people we talk to going forward. Production is starting back up, more info to come later. Until then, here are three clips of people we talked to in New Orleans- Jonathan, Dustin and Shaun.

We are the future, but who are we?

Travel Update, pt 6

Sorry for the delay on the final update, we have been quite busy. The last update I wrote on our way to LA for some filming down there. It was a great success and we shot some awesome footage.

The day we drove down we ended up in La Verne, CA to stay with Keith’s grandparents. It was great to be in a home environment for the first night in a long time. We went out to dinner and the local pizza shop, Warehouse Pizza, which was quite good. While reading the LA Times that evening i came upon lead for a story (yes I’m dorking out on being a journalist instead of just a filmmaker).

Travel Update, pt 5

Back on the road … I’m actually writing this on my laptop as we are driving down 101 (posting the day after due to internet issues). Last time we spoke, or read rather, we were in Waco, TX staying with my friend Laura and her family. The following day we interviewed Laura and her husband Steven about their American Dream. They have a much different perspective then a lot of people we have been talking to. That is because they are at a different point in their life. They are approaching their 5-year wedding anniversary this October, and their oldest daughter just turned 5 and their youngest is 8 ½ months.

Travel Update, pt 3

We had a great day filming on Monday with the International Institute of Akron. They kindly let us into their institute and gave us free reign to film and talk to their clients, which we did. Over all we did 8 interviews with their staff and clients.

To tell you a little about the Institute, their mission is “to contribute to the well-being of the community by creating and implementing programs and services to assist the foreign born to integrate into our society, to promote public awareness of the value of ethnic diversity, and to encourage international communication.” They help refugees resettle in the Akron area as well as teach English classes, and assist with the citizenship and green card process. What they are doing is great for the community and you see how much good they are doing by how many people are at their offices.

On the road, pt 1

Sorry its been a few days since the last post. We have been traveling and filming. The bus is very draining, but we are both feeling rested and ready to go.

To recap the trip so far, the bus ride was long. Really long. We left San Francisco 1am on Tuesday and arrived in Akron, OH Thursday at 5p. We had lay overs in Salt Lake City, Denver, Kansas City, St Louis and Columbus OH. It was definitely a different experience. We met all kind of people from students heading to Bonnaroo, to truck divers heading home, to regular people just traveling. Shout out to everyone we met traveling. Be safe getting to your final destination and future travels.

I know, most of you are probably asking, why would you ever take the bus?! Well we wanted to see the other side of America that isn’t often seen. Also when you fly you lose the reference of how big and diverse this country is. In both a scenery and a social sense. We also thought of why a lot of people take the bus, if flying is almost as cheap and exponentially faster. We came to the conclusion that if you live in a rural area and there is no major airport within a few hours and you are going to a place that is also far from an airport, there is really no other way to go.
